Traditional Storytelling

Assignment 3.4: Traditional Storytelling – Individual and Partner Project

Partner: Kerol Harrod

Inspirations:

I chose an African folktale story because of the beauty of the culture that I learned about from my good friend who is from Nigeria. I wanted to learn more about the African culture because the more I learned, the more I would understand about this great part of the world. Learning such beautiful things inspired me to share these wonderful stories with others.

Early Research:

I began by doing research on search engines such as Google about African folktales. There was a lot of folktales that got my attention but needed to decide on a particular one. I went to my neighborhood library and started looking at the 398.2 section of the library. I found a lot of folktales but now I needed to find out if they were in public domain. I was introduced to Anansi’s stories a while back, and I found a book that got my attention called “A Story A Story”.

Further Investigation:

When I decided that I wanted to tell a folktale story about Anansi, I started looking at the origin of the story. I read the text of the book and did some research on the internet. I then looked up more information using the TWU databases and checked out some books about Africa at my local library.

Further Research:

When I decided that I was going to tell my story about Anansi, I began searching for different books about him at my local library. One of the stories that I found was called Anansi and the Box of Stories by Stephen Krensky. The other title I found was called Anansi: That Tricky Spider by Anthony Dillett. After reading both titles I realized that Anansi was more popular than what I thought. My research did not stop here though, soon after I began looking for book reviews in the TWU database, and there is where I learned more about who and what Anansi stood for in the African culture.
